George R. Spadafino, 78 DOVER - George R. Spadafino went to rest with the Lord peacefully in his home on his 78th birthday after a final day of celebrating with the people he loved. Mr. Spadafino was the son of the late Vito and Arsola Spadafino and was born July 19, 1930, in Jersey City, N.J. where he was surrounded by nine other siblings. Through early childhood he worked hard to help support his family and later was involved in the Korean War where he served in the United States Army. During the war, Mr. Spadafino was a medic in the 8076 M.A.S.H unit. After the war he moved on to work at General Foods, which led him to Dover in 1963 where he worked as a mechanic. With a determined spirit and tremendous work ethic George became the chief union steward of the Dover plant. Through the years he eventually left General Foods and went to work for the union as a business agent for Local 56. Though work was important, he could not resist having a little fun as well. He loved coaching little league baseball and POP Warner football in which he would use his sense of strategy and enthusiastic personality to lead the teams to multiple victories. In his late years he enjoyed spending time in the secluded area of Silver Beach, Va. Most importantly his favorite thing to do was spend time with his grandchildren, Kasey and Madison Spadafino, Alyssa and Alison Sanders, and Nick Spadafino. Through the lazy days of summer he would teach them how to play cards and challenge them to his favorite horse racing games. George was a devoted member of Holy Cross Catholic Church in Dover. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States and the Elks Lodge Post 1903. Mr. Spadafino had also served on the United Way Counsel. He was vice president of Local 56 on the United Food and Commercial Workers Union Executive Board Member. He was on the advisory panel for the State of Delaware's Unemployment Compensation, and a member of the Labor Roundtable of Delaware. Mr. Spadafino was a devoted and kind husband and father who is survived by his wife of 52 years Marie Spadafino of Dover; his three children, George Spadafino and his wife Kay of Smyrna, Joseph Spadafino and his wife Janice of Dover and Lisa Sanders and her husband David of Dover; grandchildren, Kasey and Madison Spadafino of Smyrna, Alyssa and Alison Sanders of Dover, and Nick Spadafino of Dover; his five brothers, Frank Spadafino and his wife Lucy, Lenny Spadafino and his wife Sherry, Nick Spadafino and his wife Jane, John Spadafino and his wife Linda and Michael Spadafino and his Kathy; his four sisters, Ann Amatulli and her husband John, Grace Babic and her husband Jack, Mary Bellezza and husband Lenny, Catherine Thorton, as well as many nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Thursday, in Holy Cross Catholic Church, 631 S. State Street, Dover. Friends may call Wednesday July from 1 to 3 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. in Torbert Funeral Chapel South, 1145 E. Lebanon Road (Route 10), Dover. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery. Instead of flowers the family suggests contributions be made to the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center, PO Box 1668, Wilmington, DE 19899 or the National Centre for Padre Pio, 111 Barto Road, Barto, PA. 19504. Letters of condolences may be sent, and guestbook signed, at torbertfuneral.com.
