George was born in Milford son of the late Ashton and Elta (Hill) Lane; he was the eighth child in a family of 12. He worked as a Union Iron Worker for many years. George enjoyed hunting, fishing and woodworking; as well as spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He had been an active member of Houston U.M. Church. George served our country during WWII and was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy and Merchant Marine. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Lane (1990); his companion of 20 years, Sadie Carter (2017); and a son-in-law, Todd Kelly (2001). He is survived by two children, Steve Lane and wife Kathy of Middletown, and Cynthia Rae Kelly of Florida; six grandchildren, Samantha Kelly, Brahm Kelly, Natasha Kelly, Veronica Kelly, Stephen Lane and wife Jamie, and Daniel Lane; one great-grandson, Ethan Lane; a sister-in-law who was dear to him, Faye Freeman and her two daughters, Lisa Cantwell and Lora Harding. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 3, 2017 at Barratt's Chapel Cemetery, 6486 Bay Road, Frederica. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be sent to Meals on Wheels Delaware, 100 West 10th St., Suite 207, Wilmington, DE 19801. Arrangements in the care of Berry-Short Funeral Home, Milford.
