GEORGETOWN, DE - George F. Truitt, Sr. went to be with the Lord after a long illness on Monday, January 16, 2023.
George was born in Cheswold, DE, on May 17, 1935, the son of the late Rev. F. H. Truitt and Mary V. (Anderson) Truitt. He grew up a son of a Methodist preacher and lived in many towns on Delmarva. He graduated from St. Michael's High School, St. Michaels, MD in 1953. Right after high school, George began his employment with the Diamond State Telephone Co. and continued with them as they became Bell Atlantic and then Verizon. George retired after almost 35 years of employment to enjoy life with his loving wife of 68 years, Jean (Borcherding) Truitt. He was devoted to his family and enjoyed singing, golf, and traveling. He was a member of The Rotary Club and participated in a Barbershop Chorus and church choirs.
George was predeceased by his parents; his aunt, Elsie Anderson; and brother, Carl L. Truitt.
He is survived by his wife, Jean; his children, G. Frederick Truitt, Jr., his wife, Barbara (Thresher) Truitt, and Cheryl Truitt. He is also survived by his sister, Debbie (Truitt) Bradford; sister-in-law, Irene (Howeth) Truitt; grandchildren, Kristin (Truitt) Maahs, her husband, Kenneth Maahs, Jr., Jennifer Truitt; great grandchildren, Evelyn, Allison and Olivia Maahs; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Family and friends are invited to a graveside service at Barrett's Chapel Cemetery, 6362 Bay Rd. Frederica, DE on Monday, January 23, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. to be followed by a memorial service at 1:00 p.m. at Short Funeral Services, 609 E. Market St., Georgetown, DE.
Flowers would be a blessing or donations may be given in George's memory to Delaware Hospice Center, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963.
