George Donald Church Sr., 81
DELMAR - George Donald Church Sr. of Delmar passed away Friday, April 13, 2007, in his home in the presence of Peggy and Cindy. He was 81.
Mr. Church was born June 16, 1925, in Patterson, N.C., one of several children born to Arthur Brown and Ella Mae Trivitte Church.
After serving in the U.S. Army, he returned home and tried several jobs before finding the job that he truly loved, upholstery. His first upholstery job was at Broyhill Furniture where he worked for 10 years. He also worked at several other businesses in Hickory, N.C., as an upholsterer before relocating to the Eastern Shore of Virginia.
Several years after moving to the Eastern Shore he started his "own" business under the name of Church Upholstery and Sons in Pocomoke City, later changing the business name to Church Upholstery. In 1980 he moved the upholstery shop to Delmar, where he remained in business until his retirement in 2005.
Mr. Church owned and operated Church Upholstery for many years and sponsored several bowling teams in both Pocomoke City and Salisbury, Md.
He came from a very musical family and learned to play the guitar at 13. He also played the mandolin, auto harp and mouth organ. He loved gospel, blue grass and old-time country music. During the time he lived in North Carolina as well as on the Eastern Shore, he formed and played in several country music groups. Everyone that knew him knows his favorite music is, "anything played bluegrass style." He also enjoyed singing and playing music in church.
Mr. Church was an avid sportsman and enjoyed pitching horseshoes, bowling and playing golf as well as riding his Gold Wing motorcycle for many years.
He was a member of St. Paul's Methodist Church in Laurel, the American Legion Post 19 in Laurel and the Peninsula BlueGrass Inc. and the AARP.
In the past, Mr. Church was commander of the American Legion Glen Rayne Post No. 15 in Delmar, a member of the Moose Lodge in Salisbury, the Elks Lodge in Salisbury, where he loved playing golf, the Delmarva Wing of Maryland Gold Wing Motorcycle Club, the Retread Motorcycle Club and the Delmar Chamber of Commerce.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Blaine Church; and a sister, Faye Quinn.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy (Parsons-Moore) Church; five children and their spouses, George D. Jr. and Linda Church of Patterson, Gary and Debbie Church of Athens, Tenn., Michael and Debbie Church of Pittsville, Md., Charlotte Buff of Hickory and Brenda Starnes of Gaffney, S.C.; four stepdaughters, Mildred "Mickie" and Jay Bare of Snow Hill, Md., Nancy Mullen of Colonial Beach, Va., Cindy Moore of Laurel, and Donna Moore of Upper Fairmont, Md. and Delmar; a brother, Ivy E. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday in Short Funeral Home, 13 E. Grove St., Delmar, where friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday. The Rev. Donald Murray will officiate.
Burial will follow in Melson's Cemetery, Delmar.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to St. Paul's Methodist Church, 32827 Old Stage Road, Laurel, DE 19956; or Delaware Hospice, 20167 Office Circle, Georgetown, DE 19947.
