MAGNOLIA - George Coventry of Magnolia, peacefully passed away September 4, 2014 at Bayhealth Medical Center in Dover surrounded by his family. George was born October 19, 1959 to Carl Coventry and Frances Hertz at Kent General Hospital in Dover. George was 54. George was a paperboy for the Delaware State News at the age of 11 in Briar Park. He worked on the farm of Pat and Grace Caulk in Woodside, who became his second family from ages 14 through 19. On the farm he learned the values of hard work, honesty and pride in yourself when you finish any job. George was a graduate of Caesar Rodney High School class of 1978. In 1980, George went to work for the Department of Corrections in Smyrna. He retired after 33 ½ years of loyal service in July 2014 where he was known as "Scruffy". His life was short but full. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. For 17 years he and a few correctional officers went big game hunting in Tennessee, where George harvested a ram, many deer and wild boars. He was a member of the NRA, the Camden-Wyoming Moose Lodge and the Correctional Officers Association. He was a longtime volunteer for June Jam. George was preceded in death by his longtime companion, Linda Crane; and his stepfather, Ray Haley, his fishing companion; also his stepfather, Stanley Minor. George is survived by three loving daughters, Brandi Bacon (Brian) and his granddaughter Riley of Greenwood, Jeanie Coventry (Bruce Johnstone) and his grandson Blake Warncke of Clayton, and Chelsie Coventry and his grandson James Ratledge of Viola; and their mother, Gail Coventry Spalding. George is also survived by his parents, Carl Coventry and Frances Haley of Dover; his siblings, sister, Robin Coventry of Dover; and brothers, John Coventry (Laurie) of Wyoming, Joseph Minor-Stinson (Terry) of Wilmington, David Minor (Dawn) of Hartly, Lance Minor (Anne) of North Carolina, and Carl "Bud" Coventry (Debbie) of Smyrna, Wayne Coventry of Maryland; and their mother, Alice Coventry. George leaves behind nieces and nephews, cousins, and many friends. A Celebration of George's Life will be 12 p.m., Wednesday, September 10, 2014 at the Pippin Funeral Home, 119 W. Camden Wyoming Avenue, Wyoming, DE 19934. There will be a viewing at the funeral home from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Wednesday. Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Camden. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions in the memory of George Coventry be made to June Jam, Ltd. P.O.
