Frederick Matthew "Freddie" DeShields, 77

LAUREL - Frederick Matthew "Freddie" DeShields of Laurel died Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2006, in his home, after a brief battle with cancer. He was 77.

Mr. DeShields was born Feb. 21, 1929, son of the late Charles and Hagar DeShields.

He was educated in Frederick Douglas School, Seaford.

In 1953, Mr. DeShields relocated to Camden, N.J. He served in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged in 1956.

He was employed with Senalle and Son"s, retiring in 1992.

Mr. DeShields loved to go fishing and play cards with his wife. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandson, Hykeem Jr., great-grandson, E.J. and great-granddaughter, Neicy. He will be fondly remembered for telling the family, "Alright I"m ready to go, get your tails in gear."

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Norman and David; and two sisters, Hazel and Frances.

He is survived by his wife, whom he married Nov. 7, 1981, Cassie (Benton) DeShields; six sons, Hykeem Williams Sr. of Laurel, Freddie DeShields of Bridgeville, Anthony DeShields of Federalsburg, Md., Dennis DeShields of Texas, Robert Williams of Salisbury, Md., and Michael Williams of Selbyville; nine daughters, Christine DeShields and Jackie DeShields, both of Bridgeville, Hazel Thomas of Smyrna, Russine Handy of Camden, N.J., Sarah Handy of Texas, Anita Benjamin of Highpoint, N.C., Darlene Banks of Georgetown, Shavon Williams and Barbara Williams, both of Salisbury; 72 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Dorothy Dredden and Shirley Tingle; a brother, Randolph DeShields; three sisters-in-law; five brothers-in-law; three aunts, Levenia Smith, Helen Washington and Betty Davis; two uncles, Charles Washington and Andrew DeShields; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 this evening in St. Matthew"s Baptist Church, Laurel.

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday in the church, where friends may call two hours earlier.

Burial will be 2 p.m. Thursday in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Millsboro.

A gathering will follow at the church.
