DOVER - Fred R. Stewart, of Dover, passed away Thursday, November 24, 2011, at the Delaware Hospice Center, Milford, with his daughter Marie by his side. He was 89. Fred was born August 19, 1922, in Kingston, N.Y. to the late Marie Stewart. He graduated from St. Mary's Catholic High School in 1940. Fred then went to enlist and proudly served our country in the United States Air Force in 1943. He fought in WWII and retired as a MSgt. in 1965 after 22 years of service. Fred received several awards, commendations and medals. After his military career, Fred worked at Leeds Travelwear in Clayton as plant foreman. Upon the company's closure, he went to work for Dover Electric Supply as a counter salesman, until his retirement in 1984. Fred was a life member of the American Legion. Fred enjoyed coin collecting, crossword puzzles and listening to his favorite music. He especially enjoyed his daily morning outings at Hall's Family Restaurant, having breakfast and socializing with his good friends. In his younger days, Fred could be found in his garage tinkering and repairing. If it was broke, he could fix it. He also loved to sing and was always the "Light of the party". Fred was quick witted, kind hearted and a loving man. He found great joy in giving and helping others his whole life, while never expecting anything in return. He saw the good and silver lining in every situation. Fred will be sadly missed and will live on in the hearts of everyone who knew him. In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy E. Stewart; and two sisters, Hazel and Genevieve. He is survived by his two daughters, Marie A. Carey and her husband Don, with whom he lived of Dover, and Brenda Stewart of Laurel Springs, N.J.; six grandchildren, Melissa Carey, Don Carey, Jr., Dylan Carey, Matthew Stanley, Ashley Stanley and Angelica Squilla; two adoring nieces, Penny Shesa and Jenny Landry; and a special friend, Sophie Masker. Graveside service with military honors will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, December 1, 2011, at Sharon Hills Memorial Park, Dover.
