HARRINGTON - Francis J. Winkler of Harrington, died Fri., Jan. 14, 2011, at home. Mr. Winkler was born in Middleburg, N.Y., Nov. 21, 1917, the son of the late Frank and Elsie Winkler. Francis graduated from Middleburg High School in 1937, and was a graduate of Cobleskill State College class of 1939. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army 801st Tank Destroyer BN. After his discharge from the military, he worked on the family farm in New York State which was a dairy, fruit and crop farm. He and his family moved to Delaware in 1952 to continue his life long dream, farming. He was a member and very active of the Delaware Farm Bureau since 1952, where he held the positions as Kent County President, Fair Booth Chairperson with his wife Virginia for over 10 years, and the Kent County Board of Directors for many years. In 1996, the Winkler Family was recognized as the Kent County Farm Bureau family of the year. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Virginia M. Winkler in 2000. He is survived by his two sons, Robert F (Laura) and David W. (Janice L.); grandsons, Brett D (Sue), Vince T. (Julia); granddaughter, Jodi Pries (Chad); great-grandson, Frank Henry Winkler; and nephews, John and Bill Winkler and their families. The Winkler family would also like to express our thanks and appreciation to all of Francis's caregivers throughout the years of his illness. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wed., Jan. 19, 2010, at the Asbury United Methodist Church, 200 Weiner Avenue, Harrington, where friends may call on Tues., evening, Jan. 18, 2010, from 7 to 9 p.m. Burial will be in Hollywood Cemetery, Harrington, DE. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to either Delaware Hospice, 911 S. Dupont Highway, Dover, DE 19901 or to Asbury United Methodist Church, 200 Weiner Avenue, Harrington, DE 19952.
