DOVER - Florence Burrell Murdich died on Sunday, June 12, at her home in Dover, Delaware. Born in New York City, April 17, 1915, to the late Edward Burrell and Matilda Hickland Burrell. Her parents had immigrated to the United States from County Armagh in Northern Ireland. At the age of sixteen she graduated from New York City's Hunter High School, an elite public school for academically gifted students. She received a bachelor's degree cum laude from Hunter College, where she was a statistics major with a minor in mathematics. In college she was elected to membership in Phi Beta Kappa and the national mathematics honorary society Pi Mu Epsilon. After the death of her father when she was nineteen, she found full-time employment as a bookkeeper at McClellan Stores, a chain of 200 variety stores, while completing her college studies at night. In the course of her career at McClellan's, she rose to become head of its accounting department and, concurrently, head of its personnel department. She married Jack Murdich in 1942 and left McClellan's before the birth of her first child. When that child entered college, she returned to the workforce, initially part-time, at the White Plains (NY) Board of Education, soon becoming the head of the accounting department there. She retired from that position in 1980. Her husband predeceased her in 2006. She is survived by her daughters, Peggy Shearer of Scarsdale and Kathy Hoover of Dover; by her sons-in-law, Robert Shearer and James Hoover; by her grandson. Jim Hoover of New York City; and by her granddaughter, Kathryn Burrell Shearer of Bennington, Vt. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, June 29, from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. at The Heritage, 1203 Walker Road, Dover, DE. Donations in memory of Florence Burrell Murdich may be made either to the Delaware Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation, 900 Prides Crossing, Suite C111, Newark, DE 19713; or to the Delaware Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired, 800 West Street, Wilmington, DE 19801.
