CAMDEN - Fleeta Belle (Exum) Grant passed away peacefully in her home, March 15, 2021, surrounded by her loving husband and neighbors.
Fleeta was born January 11, 1931, in Tampa, Florida, where she grew up. She was the daughter of Harwood and Joyce Exum. After graduating from Brandon Florida High School, she worked for Peninsula Telephone Company in Tampa as a switchboard operator.
Married for 69 years, Fleeta met her future husband, Charles Grant in May 1951, while stationed at McDill Air Force Base, Florida. They married in December 1951. After 15 years of being stationed at several Air Force Bases in the United States and Madrid, Spain, they settled in Delaware after transferring to Dover Air Force Base. In addition to her work in communications, she also worked as a medical coder at several Air Force Installations.
In her free time, Fleeta enjoyed sewing, making many cross-stitch canvas articles. She also loved doing crossword and number puzzles, and bowling. In her younger years she was a skilled horsewoman, owning several gaited riding horses; and also enjoyed traveling extensively throughout the United States and Europe.
Fleeta is survived by her husband, Charles; a daughter, Lajuana (Grant) Gedney and husband, Tom, of Camden; her son, Jack Grant and wife, Tanya, of Zachary, La.; five grandchildren, Matthew Gedney and wife, Heidi, of Sioux Falls, S.D., Katie (Gedney) Caplinger and husband, Gary, of Magnolia, Eric Grant, of Charlotte, N.C., Michael Grant, currently serving in the U.S. Navy, stationed in Virginia Beach and Jason Grant, of Washington, D.C.; great-grandchildren, Maddie Gedney, Lucy Gedney, Penny Gedney, Gavin Caplinger, and Aubrey Grant.
Fleeta's cremains will be buried in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Millsboro, Del., when the good Lord calls her husband Charles home to join her.
