Evelyn Groves, 89

YORK, S.C. - Evelyn Groves of York passed away Saturday, Aug. 4, 2007, in the Piedmont Medical Center, Rock Hill, from complications after a hip fracture. She was 89.

Ms. Groves was born in Harrington, Del., on July 14, 1918, daughter of Nettie and Norman Wix.

She attended a country school near Harrington along with her 12 brothers and sisters.

Ms. Groves was a member of the Immanuel United Methodist Church in Grasonville, Md., for many years and a resident at Tilghman Terrace in Centreville, Md., for 20 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert S. Groves.

She is survived by three daughters, Gloria Roberts of Gambrills, Md., Alberta and husband, Tim Philbeck with whom she lived for the past five years in York, and Betty Soucy of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; two brothers, Norman and Leon Wix, both from Harrington; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

A viewing will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in McKnatt, Carpenter & Baker Funeral Home, 50 Commerce St., Harrington, where funeral services will follow at noon.

Burial will follow in Hollywood Cemetery, Milford-Harrington Highway, Harrington.
