BLACKBIRD - Eugene S. Thompson, Jr. of Blackbird, DE passed away at his home on Monday, Feb. 27, 2012. He was 80. Mr. Thompson was born Oct. 23, 1931, in Landenberg, Pa., the son of the late Eugene S. Sr., and Agnes Thompson. He retired due to disability after over 20 years as a Pipefitter for the BF Shaw Co. of Wilmington. Mr. Thompson enjoyed spending time with family and friends, being outdoors, working in the yard and gardening. He also liked crabbing, fishing, and taking trips to the beach. Other enjoyments included playing cards and cutting grass with his John Deere Tractor. Eugene was a member of the Unity Lodge No. 32 A.F. & A.M. of Newport, where he had just received his 50 year anniversary achievement award. Other memberships included the Lodge Council Chapter Consistory, the Tall Cedars of Lebanon, Brandywine Forest No. 20, and the Pipefitters and Plumbers Union, Local 74 of Wilmington, De for 62 years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Florence Marie Thompson in 2007; and two sisters, Bertha Steele and Susie Goad. He is survived by two sons, Eugene S. Thompson III (Joy) of Sudlersville, Md., and Donnie Thompson (Carol) of Newark; three daughters, Sharon Ogden (Bill) of Clayton, Margie Gillespie of Smyrna, and Ruth Ann Alexander (Kevin) of Smyrna; a brother, Richard Thompson (Marlene) of Newport; a sister, Agnes Munden, also of Newport; 17 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. A viewing will be offered on Saturday, March 3, 2012, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Faries Funeral Chapel, located at 29 S. Main St., Smyrna. Masonic services will begin at 12:30 p.m. Funeral services will begin at 1 p.m. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery in Smyrna. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Kenton United Methodist Church Building Fund, PO Box 188, Kenton, DE 19955.
