Ethel May Shorts

CHURCH HILL, Md. - Ethel May Shorts died on Dec. 4, 2017 at Compass Regional Hospice.
Born in Sudlersville, Md. on Dec. 24, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Nathaniel Leager and Ethel Holden Leager. She married Samuel Emory Shorts and dedicated most of her life to working with her husband in farming and raising their six children. She also worked as a waitress and after the children were grown, worked at Black & Decker until retiring in 2002.
She is survived by her children, Karen Fila (and husband Bruce) of Davie, Fla., Donald Shorts of Church Hill, Steve Shorts of Church Hill, Elaine Dell (and husband Roland) of Stevensville, Md. and Kevin Shorts (and wife Tammy) of Centreville; her sisters, Elizabeth Hay of Sudlersville, Md., Doris Schelts of Millington, Md. Betty Ervin of Chestertown, Md., Julia Marshall of Leipsic, and Helen Whaley of Betterton, Md.; grandchildren, Sam, Erin, Megan, Donnie and Lucretia Lyn Shorts. She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Emory Shorts in 1995; her son, Warren Shorts in 1998; and her siblings, Mary Glanding, Paul Leager, Earl Leager, Brice Leager, Charles Leager, Annie Leager and Cliff Leroy Leager.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, Dec. 8, 2017 at 12 p.m. at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A., 408 S. Liberty Street, Centreville, MD 21617, where friends and family may visit beginning at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Sharon Hills Memorial Park, 2928 Sharon Hill Road, Dover, DE 19904.
