Emma (Gooden) Sweeney, 98

LITITZ, Pa. - Emma (Gooden) Sweeney of Lititz, formerly of Milford, Del., passed away Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2007, in Moravian Manor, Lititz. She was 98.

Mrs. Sweeney was born June 26, 1909, in Henderson, Md., daughter of the late Ezekiel and Mary (Pritchett) Gooden.

She graduated from Henderson High School with the class of 1925, and continued her education at the Salisbury Normal School, now known as Salisbury University, from which she graduated in 1927.

Over the next several years after graduation, Mrs. Sweeney was an elementary school teacher in Easton, Md., and Preston, Md., and lastly taught in the Huntington Valley School District in Pennsylvania.

After her marriage, she continued her teaching career part time as a substitute.

Mrs. Sweeney found great personal satisfaction in volunteer work as a "Grey Lady" with the American Red Cross in Delaware County for 17 years.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Milford, where she participated in the women"s association.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Sweeney was preceded in death by her husband, Allen F. Sweeney, in 1990; and a brother, Winfred C. Gooden.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Carol A. and John D. Feyock of East Petersburg; a sister-in-law, Laura Gooden of Dover, Del.; three grandchildren, John Feyock Jr. and his wife Susan J., Susan F. Hunter and her husband H. Landon, and Charles Feyock and his wife Corinne; four great-grandchildren, Andrew Feyock, Carly Hunter, Bryson Hunter and Ainsley Feyock; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be noon Monday in Rogers Funeral Home, 301 Lakeview Ave., Milford, where friends may call one hour prior.

Burial will be in the Odd Fellows Cemetery, Camden.

Instead of flowers, the family has requested memorial contributions to the First Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 172, Milford, DE 19963; or to Moravian Manor, 300 W. Lemon St., Lititz, PA 17543.
