SILVER SPRING, Md. - Elizabeth S. Layton, "Beth" passed away on Tuesday, Mar. 7, 2017. Beth was born in Wilmington, and was the daughter of Samuel and Elsie Southard. Her two sisters, Laura and Belle preceded her in death. She was a graduate of Felton High School and earned both a Bachelor of Arts and Master's Degree in Education from University of Delaware. She began her teaching career in English at Georgetown and later at Seaford. She married Paul E. Layton and moved to Maryland, where she continued her career at Sherwood and Bethesda Chevy Chase High Schools. As an author and teacher, Beth's dedicated career spanned 40 years. Elizabeth was married to Paul for 62 years and together they were flanked by their cherished Bentley. One of their greatest joys was traveling to every state in America, highlighted by square dancing all over the world. Beth and Paul were devoted and dynamic members of Holiday Park Senior Center in Silver Spring, Md. At 98, Beth was one of the two oldest alumni of Felton High School. She is survived by nieces and nephews, Delores Hewes, Henry Hewes, William Hewes, John Hewes, Betty Chambers, and Larry Layton. Surviving cousins are Aileen Boyd, Paula Custer, David Minner, and Michael Minner. Funeral services will be held in the chapel of Berry-Short Funeral Home, Main Street, Felton, at 12 p.m. Monday, Mar. 13, 2017, where friends may call one hour before. Interment will be at Barrett's Cemetery, Frederica. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Holiday Park Senior Center, 3950 Ferrara Drive, Silver Spring, MD 20906.
