Eleanor Taylor Smith, 89
GOLDSBORO, Md. - Eleanor Taylor Smith of Goldsboro died Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2007, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. She was 89.
She was born Sept. 15, 1917, in Wilmington, Del. to the late Levin W. Sr. and Ruth Plummer Taylor.
Mrs. Smith moved to Greensboro with her parents when she was a child.
She was a 1938 graduate of Western Maryland College.
Mrs. Smith taught school in the Capital School District, during which time she earned her Master"s Degree in Education.
She taught math for many years before becoming a guidance counselor.
Mrs. Smith retired from teaching in 1979.
She was a longtime member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, Goldsboro.
Fishing was her favorite activity for years, although she enjoyed many hobbies.
For years Mrs. Smith made beautiful quilts and handwork crafts, such as needlepoint and counted cross-stitch.
In later years, her handmade wool hooked rugs were extraordinary, and she loved belonging to the hooking club known as "The Happy Hookers."
Mrs. Smith was always ready to travel, and went on many trips, including Alaska, Hawaii, England and several trips across the United States.
Even though she enjoyed traveling all her life, she was always happiest surrounded by her beloved family and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Carlton W. Smith Sr. in 1980; her son, Carlton W. Smith Jr. in 2007; her brothers, Robert Taylor and William Taylor; and sister, Betsy Griffith.
She is survived by six children, Carol and her husband, William Holden of Goldsboro, Robert T. Smith of Easton, Betty and her husband, Danny Schwaninger of Easton, Richard T. Smith and his partner, Kimberly Chase of Longmont, Colo., Joseph N. and his wife, Joanne Smith of Imperial, Calif., Trisha Manfredi and her husband, Peter of South Glastonbury, Conn.; daughter-in-law, Joan B. Smith of Goldsboro; two siblings, Boone Case Taylor of Edmonds, W.Va. and Connie Taylor Murray of Pinehurst, N.C.; 13 grandchildren, Matthew Schwaninger and his wife, Christine, Adam Schwaninger and his wife, Julie, Megan Pulleyn and her husband, Schuyler, Alexis Smith, Cari Carter and her husband, K.C., Stephanie Torgerson and her husband, Scott, Eric Smith and her wife, Keri, Meghan Farrell, Matt Farrell, Gabi Smith, Jacob Smith, Tracey Baker and her husband, Jeff, Pam Mosley and her husband, Ben; and 12 great-grandchildren, Cailyn Carter, Rileigh Carter, Zachary Torgerson, Nathan Torgerson, Connor Smith, Kyle Cook, Stephen Cook, Paige Cook, Tracey Mosley, Max Baker, Alex Baker and Sydney Baker.
Services will be 2 p.m. Friday in Fleegle and Helfenbein Funeral Home, Greensboro, where friends may call one hour prior.
Interment will be in Greensboro Cemetery, Greensboro.
