CAMBRIDGE, Md. - Elder Robert S. Stanton of Cambridge went to be with the Lord Saturday, April 21, 2007, in Dorchester General Hospital, Cambridge. He was 61.
Elder Stanton was born Oct. 17, 1945, in Trappe. He was the third of six children born to the late Lester Stanton Sr. and Edna Louise Wilson.
He was educated in the public schools of Talbot County. He graduated in 1964 from the Robert Russia Moton High School.
After graduation he enlisted in the military of which he served three years. During his time in the military he obtained the rank of sergeant.
In May of 1981, Elder Stanton was joined in holy matrimony to Cynthia Doraine Stanley. He was a devoted husband, father, brother and friend.
He was known to implement sundry occupations during his pilgrimage of life. To name a few he worked for the Town of Easton as a municipal utility employee, Caldwell Casting, Wirecloth, master caterer for various catering companies, entrepreneur of his own window cleaning service and security guard at Dorchester General Hospital.
In 1982, he accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior and was baptized. Shortly thereafter he joined Center Street Church of God, now known as Refuge Temple Church of God. In 1983, he was ordained as a deacon in the Lord's Church. In 1985, he enrolled in leadership classes then proceeded to become a Sunday school teacher of the adult class and also served as assistant clerk to the personnel office of the ministry. In 2002, Elder Stanton enrolled in the Ministerial Intern Program and during that year he was also was afforded the spiritual privilege of becoming an elder.
Numerous accolades and recognitions were bestowed upon Elder Stanton. He served faithfully with his wife, side by side, in ministry assisting to catapult the ministry to another dimension. His attributes in ministry were recognized in the state of Maryland as well as internationally.
Elder Stanton spoke of, inspired and demonstrated many strong leadership strengths including how to love your wife and take care of your family, as he was extremely family oriented. He was the epitome of a Godly man, exemplifying integrity, honesty and commitment.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Leroy Stanton and Raymond Young.
He is survived by his wife, Pastor Cynthia D. Stanton; four children, Sherenna Blackwell, Robert A. Purnell and his wife Jamie, Rosalind D. Roberts, and Michael C. Wheatly and his wife Melinda; three sisters, Consola Johns, Harriet Chase and her husband Robert, and Linda Walker and her husband James; two brothers, Lester Stanton and his wife Ruth, and Theodore Copper; two sisters-in-law, Shirley A. Stanley and her husband Charles, and Portia S. Wheatley and her husband Gordon; three brothers-in-law, Melvin A. Stanley and his wife Evelyn, Dennis L. Stanley, and Lorenzo (Tony) Stanley; two aunts, Lillian Wilson and Nannie Lane; 11 grandchildren; four godchildren, Randolph Meekins, Nakeyia Rhodes, Otika Gibbs and Trina Baylor; and a host of nieces, nephews and many, many friends.
Funeral service will be Saturday, at 11 a.m., in the Refuge Temple Church of God in Christ, Cambridge, where friends may call two hours prior to service, and again on Friday from 6 to 9 p.m.. A celebration of life will be 7 p.m. Friday.
Burial will be in Maryland Veterans Cemetery, Hurlock, at 9 a.m. on Monday.
