Edward Longfellow Hughes

Edward Longfellow Hughes, 90 KENTON - Edward Longfellow Hughes, passed away at home, Wednesday April 7, 2010. He was 90. Mr. Hughes was born March 13, 1920 in the family home in Kenton to the late Edward and Elizabeth Cooper Hughes. He was a self-employed farmer in the Kenton area for most of his life. Mr. Hughes was a United States Army veteran of World War II, serving with the 354th Infantry in the European Theatre. He was involved in the liberation of Buchenwald concentration camp and the Battle of the Bulge. He received a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart for his service. Mr. Hughes was also a charter member and Past Commander of V.F.W. Post 8801. He was an active member of the Kenton Ruritan Club for over 50 years and took great pride and pleasure in the organization and received a tribute from the Delaware Senate for his long and faithful service. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Louise Hughes and Claire Conley; and two brothers, David and Richard Hughes. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Sara Ranshaw Hughes; three daughters, Margaret E. Hughes of High Point, N.C., Susan Hughes Swann and her husband Steven of Clayton, and Martha Hughes Widing and her husband, Chris of Still Pond, Md.; two grandchildren, Christine Bailey and Jared Rochester; a great granddaughter, Sara Bailey; and a sister, Elizabeth Arnold. Services will be at 11 a.m., Tuesday April 13, 2010 in the Kenton United Methodist Church, West Commerce Street Kenton, DE. Friends may call Sunday April 11, 2010 from 1-3 p.m. in the Faries Funeral Chapel, 29 South Main Street Smyrna, DE . Burial will be in Bryn Zion Cemetery near, Kenton, DE. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made to the Kenton Ruritan Club, PO Box 275 Kenton, DE 19955. Condolence letters may be sent by visiting www.fariesfuneralhome.com
