Edna Mae Spence, 84

LINCOLN - Edna Mae Spence, of Lincoln, died Saturday, March 28, 2009, in Milford Memorial Hospital. She was 84. She was born and raised in Shiloh, N.C. She was the daughter of the late Sadie Trafton Thompson and the late Richard Thompson Sr. Edna married Preston Purnell Spence Sr., the love of her life, on Nov. 15, 1941. During this union they were blessed with 12 children. They were married for 54 years. Edna was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and homemaker. Edna always said "God's will must be done". She enjoyed reading, sewing, gardening, canning, cake decorating, cooking, crocheting, taking pictures,and playing her piano. Whenever she played her piano, she always played her favorite song "What a friend we have in Jesus." She was preceded in death by her sister, Delilian Alford Weathersby; her brothers, Winford Sr., Richard Jr. and Christopher Thompson; her sons Charles, Preston Jr. and Everett Spence; and her daughter, Delilian Spence White. She is survived by her daughters, Vivian Spence and Yvonne Spence of Lincoln, Darlene Morris and her husband Phillip of Cheswold; her sons, Elvin Spence and his wife Sarah of Frederica, Larry Spence of Dover, Dennis Spence and his wife Dorcell of Magnolia, Robert Spence of Lincoln, and Michael Spence of Ellendale; daughter-in-law, Irene Spence of Dover; son-in-law, Frank White of Houston; sisters-in-law, Minnie Lee White of Elizabeth City, N.C., Adeline Thompson of Seaford and Clara Thompson of Milford; 15 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. As Edna requested, she will not be having a funeral. A viewing will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at St. Johns Second Baptist Church located at Mount Joy Road in Millsboro. Interment will be in Peoples Cemetery located in Rehoboth.
