GREENWOOD - Edith Pamelia Vincent, 90, of Greenwood, Del., entered eternal rest on August 24, 2013. Edith was born in Scottsville, Va. on October 4, 1922, the seventh child born to Alta Pamelia Brockenbrough Hudson and Walter William Hudson. Edith received her Nursing Diploma in 1943 from Union Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Baltimore, her Bachelor of Science Degree in 1954, and Master's Degree in 1957, both from Peabody College/Vanderbilt University. During World War II, she joined the American Red Cross and was assigned to the Army Nurse Corps, where she was a First Lieutenant. After the war, Edith was employed at Delmar School as the school nurse, hockey and basketball coach, and journalism teacher. She also promoted health education in Prince George County, Md., writing health curricula and piloting projects on alcohol and sex education. Her next professional step in 1968 was as State Supervisor of School Nurses with the Delaware Department of Public Instruction (now the Delaware Department of Education). Her duties soon increased to include health education and the Drug-Free Schools and Communities Program. She was the originator of the Keen Cat program, which promoted health and fitness in the elementary schools throughout the state. Edith Vincent served on numerous state and national committees. She was the recipient of many awards from the organizations she served. In 2004, Edith was a recipient of the Hall of Fame of Delaware Women Award. She was recognized for her contributions and achievements in the development of legislation requiring a school nurse in every Delaware school, establishing a policy for comprehensive K-12 health education, and promoting the need for school-based wellness centers. After retiring from the Department of Education in 1998, Edith served on the school board of Woodbridge School District for ten years. It was during that time that Nemours Health and Prevention Services named a Healthy Schools Award in her honor. Among her many accomplishments, Edith wrote a book entitled, The Influence of School Nurses on Delaware's School Health Services. Edith was a member of Greenwood Memorial VFW Post #7478. She was the first and only woman commander of the Post. She was an active member of the Department of Delaware VFW and worked with the committee that sponsored the National Citizenship Education Teacher Award for Grades K-12. Edith was an active and faithful member of St. Johnstown United Methodist Church of Greenwood, Delaware. Her strong faith kept her going, especially the past few years of diminishing health. Edith was most proud of her daughter, Cathy, and the family business, Adandy Farm. Everyone who knew Edith will dearly miss her, especially the farm staff, the school nurses and her close friends who have fond memories of "Keen Cat" and the wellness workshops. She will always be remembered as a child-health advocate and educational leader. She was preceded in death by husband, Robert J. Vincent, in 2001; her parents; and her sisters, Ruth Carter and Annie Hudson; and brothers, Hugh, Walter and Thomas B. Hudson. She is survived by her daughter, Catherine Vincent, of Greenwood, Del.; sister, Helen Allen of Charlottesville, Va; nieces, Mary Jane Allen, Betty Morris, Ann Ester Carter and Elaine Jones of Va. and Jo Ann Hudson of Fla.; and nephew, Thomas W. Hudson of Fla. The family would like to express a special thank you to Edna Butler for her kind and compassionate care of Edith. A visitation for family and friends will be 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2013 at St. Johnstown United Methodist Church, St. Johnstown Road, Greenwood, Del. with a memorial service following at 3 p.m. A reception will be held immediately afterward at the Greenwood VFW Post #7478. Interment will be private. Arrangements by Fleischauer Funeral Home, Greenwood, Del. In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that contributions be made in Edith's name to St. Johnstown United Methodist Church, PO Box 1063, Greenwood, DE 19950, or the Edith P. Vincent Scholarship Fund c/o Greenwood VFW #7478, PO Box 314, Greenwood, DE, or to DSNA Scholarship Fund, c/o Patricia Guilday, 2652 Abington Road, Wilmington, DE 19810.
