SILVER SPRING, Md. - Duncan Campbell Smith Jr., a retired industrial engineer who spent 38 years with the Department of the Army, died after a long illness June 15 in Riderwood Village in Silver Spring, Md., where he had lived for the last three years. He was 87.
Mr. Smith took great pride in his family, his work, and his country.
Mr. Smith served his entire civilian and military career at the Picatinny Arsenal in northern New Jersey.
He served there in the U.S. Army during World War II and received the Good Conduct Medal.
His long and dedicated civilian service to the Department of the Army contributed to the development of sophisticated ordinance and materiel for U.S. forces during the Korea and Vietnam conflicts and to the establishment of our nuclear deterrent during the Cold War.
He was born in Jacksonville, Tenn., but spent the next 65 years living in Morris County, N.J.
He attended Dover High School in Dover, N.J., lettering in four varsity sports. He attended the Newark College of Engineering in Newark, N.J., and later the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, graduating with honors.
After retiring, Mr. Smith lived in Slaughter Beach and Milford for 19 years.
He was a Master Mason in Acacia Lodge No. 20, F&AM, Dover, N.J., and an avid volunteer firefighter, serving as a foreman in the Dover Volunteer Fire Department.
For over 50 years, he was an active and faithful member of the First Memorial Presbyterian Church, Dover, N.J., where he was an elder and trustee. He was later a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Milford.
He was a volunteer at Milford General Hospital.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Dorothy H. Sarles, also of Silver Spring; three children, Duncan C. Smith III, Susan D. Schiffner and Christopher A. Smith, all of the Washington, D.C. area; sisters, Doris Smith and Virginia DeGroat; a brother, Austin Smith; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in the First Presbyterian Church of Milford, 101 S. Walnut Street, Milford.
Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.
Instead of flowers, donations are welcomed to either the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 11454, Alexandria, VA 22312; or to the Riderwood Village Employee Appreciation Fund, Department of Philanthropy, Riderwood Village, 3110 Gracefield Road, Silver Spring, MD 20904.
