NEWARK - Dr. Leroy Manlove, VMD, of Newark and formerly of Elkton, Md., affectionately known as "Doc", passed away on Sunday, Sept. 23, 2018.
Doc was the eleventh and youngest child of the late George and Lena (Macklin) Manlove, of Milford. As the last sibling to pass, his death closes a chapter on a generation of Manloves, many of whom made their mark on the Delmarva Peninsula.
Following his graduation from high school in 1944, Doc enlisted in the U.S. Navy; he later attended and graduated from the University of Delaware. He and Betty Ann Goins met at a wedding, and ultimately married in 1949. Together, they raised five children. With her help, he completed veterinary school at the University of Pennsylvania, after which they moved to set up their home and veterinary practice in Elkton, Md.
In addition to being a busy father and veterinarian, Leroy was also active in his community. He served as a Director for Peoples Bank of Elkton, and as a member and President of the Cecil County Board of Education for many years. Doc later spent considerable energy as the chair of Cecil Citizens Against Drugs. He was a member of the Rotary Club, was recognized as a lifetime member of the local Kiwanis Club, and was a Master Mason.
In his leisure time, Doc enjoyed boating, hunting, and was an avid supporter and member of Ducks Unlimited. Upon retirement from veterinary medicine, he spent two years as a flight attendant on a private jet, which allowed him to visit and experience many cities in Europe and Asia.
Leroy Manlove was a man of great character with an infectious smile. Doc loved fiercely, laughed with abandon and argued his perspective without hesitation. He cared passionately about many things, including his family, his many friends and acquaintances, and his community.
In addition to his parents and siblings, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Betty; son, Steven; and daughter, Susan.
Survivors include his son, Jeffrey, and his daughters, Madeline and Grace; daughter, Melissa and husband, Mark Kolomaznik, and children, Miela and husband, Dan Paraska, and Max; daughter, Beth and husband, Greg Altemus, and children, Ashley and Steven; and daughter-in-law, Sandra, son, Ty, and his daughters, Layla and Adeline.
Funeral service will be held at 12 Noon, Monday, Oct. 1, 2018, at Cherry Hill United Methodist Church, 33 Elk Mills Road, Elkton, Md., where visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Interment with military honors will be in Cherry Hill Methodist Cemetery. His children and grandchildren invite all with a story to share to help us celebrate his remarkable life.
The family wishes to thank the Methodist Country House staff in Willow Brook Court for their friendship, care and support of Doc during his time there.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in his honor may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, or to Cherry Hill United Methodist Church, in care of Hicks Home for Funerals, 103 W. Stockton Street, Elkton, MD 21921.
