Dr. John Winfield Camp Sr.

SMYRNA - After battling a long fight with ongoing illnesses, Retired USAF, Chief Master Sergeant, Dr. John Winfield Camp Sr., 76, of Smyrna, passed away peacefully at his home, Oct. 23, 2011, surrounded by family and loved ones. Son of James Benjamin Camp and Edith Cole Camp, John was born in Galva, Iowa, and was raised in Stockbridge, Mich., where he graduated from Stockbridge High School in 1953. In 1954, he enlisted in the United States Air Force serving his country honorably for 28 years before retiring with the high rank of Chief MSgt. in 1982. During his time in the military, John worked towards his achievements in higher education, acquiring a Bachelor of Arts and a Master's in Administration from Central Michigan, all the while working and teaching graduate level courses. After retiring from service, John took a position at Wilmington College, where he held many positions including, but not limited to, Dean of Students and Head of the Business Department, along with teaching classes in Business, Economics, and Administration. He was a committed man of education during his 20 years at Wilmington College; teaching and working towards earning an MBA from Wilmington College and finally, his Doctorate in Education from the University of Delaware in 1990, before retiring in 2000; upon which time he took a position as Academic Dean and Educational Specialist at American University Dublin in Dublin, Ireland for a year. John was predeceased in life by his father, James Benjamin Camp; his mother, Edith Cole Camp; his brother, Robert Camp and wife Charlotte Camp; and his sister, Josephine Camp Swanson and husband Roger Swanson. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Janet Mench Camp; son, John and wife Tanya; son, James B. II and wife Kristen; daughter, Karen and husband Steve Wilson; daughter, Cindy and husband Dwight Craig; grandchildren, Autumn Camp, Josh Crapps and wife Tiffany, McKenzie Camp, Kristian, Trisha, Carol Ann Wilson and husband Sean Donahue, Madeleine, Morgan, and Mason Craig; two great-grandsons, Cody and Cameron; as well as nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and many extended family members. Dr. John W. Camp, Sr. will always be remembered as a hard working man, devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, father-in-law, son-in-law, brother-in-law, brother, uncle and son; dedicated to his family and friends. John enjoyed his time spent with his family and cherished all the time he had here on this Earth. Ret. USAF, CMSgt. Dr. John Winfield Camp, Sr. will be dearly missed, but most certainly not forgotten. A viewing will be today, Oct. 26, 2011 from 7 to 9 p.m., in the Faries Funeral Chapel, located at 29 S. Main St., Smyrna. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Oct. 27, 2011, at 1 p.m., at the funeral home. The burial services will be held on Monday, Oct. 31, 2011, at 1 p.m., in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Bear. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a Scholarship Fund, for a deserving Military student, seeking a degree in Business from Wilmington University in the name of Dr. John W.
