MILFORD - Dr. David Nicholson Sills Jr. of Milford died Monday, Aug. 6, 2007, at Bayhealth-Milford Memorial Hospital. He was 84.
Dr. Sills was born May 7, 1923, in Baltimore, son of the late David N. Sr. and Helen (Nelson) Sills.
He graduated from Milford High School with the class of 1940, then entered the pre-med program at the University of Maryland, graduating from medical school from the same institution in 1946.
Dr. Sills was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving part of his tour during World War II as a surgeon in Okinawa. He was honorably discharged after his tour of duty with the rank of captain.
He was a general surgeon with Milford Memorial Hospital, now Bayhealth, from 1954 until his retirement in 1987. His kind and gentle nature, warm smile and surgical expertise were a blessing to hundreds of patients who were in his care during his years in the medical profession.
Dr. Sills enjoyed golf and tennis and traveled abroad extensively.
He was a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and a member of the Shawnee Country Club in Milford and the Maryland Interclub Seniors Golf Association.
Dr. Sills was an active member of the First United Presbyterian Church in Milford, where he served several years as a trustee and elder.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Norma H. Sills; a brother and sister-in-law, Nelson and Nancy Sills of Houston; a sister, Winifred Leithiser of Milford; eight nieces, Donna Rayne and her husband Frank of Homosassa, Fla., Carole Downs of Acworth, Ga., Susan Miller and her husband Carroll of Seaford, JoAnn Lord and her husband J.B. IV of Seaford, Tina Hollis of Milford, Alicia Hollis of Milford, Winifred Brantner and her husband Jim of Jonesboro, Tenn., and Nancy Ross and her husband Steven of Alpharetta, Ga.; and four nephews, James Hollis and his wife Terry of Georgetown, Thomas Hollis and his wife Diane of Felton, David Sills IV and his wife Denise of Bear, and Andrew Sills and his wife Lisa of Roswell, Ga.
A memorial service will be 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 15, at the First Presbyterian Church, 101 S. Walnut St., Milford.
Burial will be private.
Instead of flowers, the family has suggested memorial contributions to the First Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 172, Milford, DE 19963.
