Douglas J. Greene

DOVER - Douglas J. Greene of Dover passed away Saturday Sept. 21, 2013 at Delaware Hospice Center, Milford. He was 86. Mr. Greene was born December 12, 1926 in Jersey City, New Jersey to the late Frank Greene and Lillian Armstrong Greene. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1944 and served in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre as part of the Naval Amphibious Forces in Okinawa and Iwo Jima. Mr. Greene was particularly proud to see the flag of the United States of America go up at IWO JIMA signifying victory over Japan and ending the war. He was honorably discharged in 1946 as a machinist mate third class with honorable mention for combat at sea and earned the American Theatre Ribbon, The Asiatic Pacific Ribbon 2 Stars and the Philippine Liberty Ribbon. Mr. Greene returned to Jersey City, N.J., eventually married and had 5 children. He worked various mechanic jobs, including Branch Motors until he started at Sealand Continental Shipping and subsequently volunteered for 2 tours in the Viet Nam Facility maintenance from 1968-1973. Returning stateside, he left Sealand to work at a community college and later Prudential Insurance in Holmdel, N.J. from where he retired in 1988. Mr. Greene is survived by his wife of 35 years, Therese (Teri) Greene of Dover; children, Douglas J. Greene, Jr. and his wife Lauratta of Coco, Fla., Lillian June Gonzalez and her husband John of Somerville, N.J., Robert K. Greene of Orwigsburg, Pa., Diane M. Mayer and her husband John of Middlesex, N.J., Thomas R. Greene and his wife Kathy of Edison, N.J.; stepsons, Joseph B. Talerico and his wife Cynthia, and Donald Talerico and his wife Cindy he had several, grandchildren, great grandchildren, plus numerous nieces and nephews.
