GEORGETOWN - Dorothy Jones Sapp died on Wed., April 23rd, in Seaford, after a full, vibrant life. "Dot" was born Dec.12, 1918, in Georgetown, the youngest of the four children of John and Sallie Jones. A 1935 graduate of Georgetown High School, Dot studied at the University of Delaware and at Goldey-Beacom College, where she was added to the Distinguished Alumni Gallery in 1993. As a young woman, she worked for the Works Progress Administration in Wilmington. Dot married Carey Davenport Sapp on December 12, 1941, and they moved into their new home on Pine Street in Georgetown, where they raised four children. Dot volunteered with numerous organizations, including the American Red Cross, Delaware Hospice, Meals on Wheels, the Georgetown Aid Society, and the Georgetown Historical Society. She served on the Board of Directors at both Red Cross and Delaware Hospice and chaired the 1st Sussex County Festival of Trees. She was appointed by two governors to serve on the Board of Funeral Services for the State of Delaware. She received many awards and commendations for her work, including a Governor's Outstanding Volunteer Award in 1992. A 46-year Red Cross volunteer, she was named an Honorary Life Member of the American Red Cross, DE Chapter. Dot was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Georgetown for 86 years and held many positions within the church over the years. Dot traveled extensively with friends and family, visiting Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Great Britain, New Zealand, Fiji, Canada, Hawaii, the Panama Canal, and many areas of the United States. In her spare time, she enjoyed gardening, reading, knitting, and spending time with family. At age 89, Dot moved from her house on Pine Street to Methodist Manor House, where she made many friends, hosted family events, continued volunteering, and actively participated in community life. Dot was gracious and kind, but never shied away from expressing her views. You always knew where you stood with her, and every compliment she gave was heartfelt. She was elegant and classy, but down to earth. She always made family a priority. She was preceded in death by her husband; her sons, Carey D. Sapp Jr. and Robert L. Sapp; and her siblings, Casper, Mary, and Joe Jones. Dot is survived by her daughters, Sally Woodall and Ginny Succarotte, who lovingly cared for her in her final months of life. She is also survived by grandchildren, Brian Hastings, Jenny Woodall, Trey Sapp, Sara Hastings, Steven Sapp, Robyn Atkins, Robert Sapp, Annie Woodall, and Zach Woodall; great-grandchildren, Sophie, Ylena, Avery, Riley, Liana, Daven, and Hunter; daughters-in-law Betty Oldham Sapp and Barbara Sapp; extended family, and friends. Memorial services will be held on Monday, April 28, at 1:00 p.m. at Short Funeral Services, 609 E. Market St., Georgetown, DE. Visitation begins at noon. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Dot's memory to PUMH Manor House Benevolence Fund, 726 Loveville Road, Suite 3000, Hockessin, DE 19707 or Delaware Hospice, 16 Polly Drummond Center, Newark, DE 19711.
