DOVER - Dorothy Jean Snavely Gilmore died March 14, 2015 in Stonington, Conn. due to complications of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, commonly known as ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease. She was born Oct. 16, 1942 in Johnstown, Pa. the daughter of the late Charles and Ethel (Crawford) Snavely. Jean graduated in 1960 from Johnstown High School and from the Western Pennsylvania Hospital School of Nursing in 1963. In 1964, Jean joined the Pennsylvania Air Force Reserve and reported for active duty in April of 1966. Always a nurse, she served at Vandenberg Air Force Base, California, Izmir, Turkey, and Anchorage, Alaska, where she met Robert "Bob," her husband of 40 years. Jean served on several other "lower 48" bases including Dover, Del. Jean and Robert F. Gilmore married Nov. 15, 1975 in Goldsboro, N.C. Soon after, Jean was transferred to Dover Air Force Base where she continued to serve until 1979. Upon leaving the United States Air Force, Jean continued her nursing career, serving as the Director of Nursing at Westminster Village in Dover, Del. She gained a "step-son," Bobby, in 1975. However, the "step" was dropped soon after and Bobby was lucky enough to receive the love, wisdom, and guidance that Jean offered. In 1989, Bobby married Susan and again, Jean continued to offer the gifts of love, wisdom, and guidance. Jean and Bob both shared traveling as their favorite hobby. The adventurers frequented Europe and numerous exotic locations. But, Jean's favorite destination was Hawaii, where Jean and Bob would spend long winter breaks lounging on the beach. In 1993 and 1997, Jean welcomed Chris and Tommy, her grandsons, into the world and oh, how deeply she cherished her time with them. Jean once again shared wisdom, strong morals, and values with her grandsons, helping them to grow into fine young men. She also shared her love of travel with the entire family. Jean and Bob shared many trips including Hawaii and Disney with the "boys." Jean's loving support will forever be cherished by both grandsons. Jean will be missed dearly by her loving husband, Bob; Bobby (son); Susan (daughter-in-law); and Chris and Tommy (grandsons). In leiu of flowers donations may be made to the ALS association at www.alsa.org. Jean's family will receive friends Wednesday, March 18, 2015 from 10:30-11:00 a.m. followed by a service at 11:00 at the Mystic Funeral Home, Route 1, Mystic, CT. Burial will follow with military honors at the Elm Grove Cemetery, Route 27, Mystic, CT.
