Doris L. DeGroodt, 70 GALENA, Md. - Doris L. DeGroodt, 70, of Galena, died Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2009, in her home. Doris was born Dec. 25, 1938, in Woodbury, N.J., daughter of the late Harry R. and Dorothy Warren Simmerman. For 30 years she lived in Pitman, N.J., where she raised her family and worked for Dr. Ray James dental office. In 1992 she and her husband retired to Galena, where she was a member of Olivet United Methodist Church. She also enjoyed gardening, reading and travel. Mrs. DeGroodt is survived by her husband of 51 years, Ralph S. DeGroodt; a son, R. Patrick DeGroodt and his wife Colleen of Sea Girt, N.J.; a daughter, Dale Verbits and her husband Max of Salisbury; a sister, JoAnn Brown and her husband Wayne of Pennsville, N.J.; and three granddaughters, Elizabeth, Alexis and Nicole Verbits. Funeral services will be 4 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 28, in the Galena Funeral Home of Stephen L. Schaech, 118 W. Cross St., Galena, where friends may call one hour prior to service. Interment will be private. Family suggests memorials offered to the Brain Injury Association of Delaware or Susan B. Komen Foundation in care of the funeral home. www.galenafuneralhomeofsls.com
