GEORGETOWN – Donald Lee West, Sr. passed away peacefully at Beebe Healthcare on Monday, September 3, 2018. Donald was born in Stockley, Del son of the late Isaac G. and Effie (Holston) West and was a lifelong resident of Sussex County. Donald was a survey tech with the Soil Conservation District for 28 years, retiring in 1986. Donald also proudly served his country in the US Army and Army Reserve where he retired at Sergeant First Class in 1998 after 22 years. Donald was always ready and willing to help others. He was a past member of Georgetown Jaycees, a volunteer and later transporter at Beebe Healthcare, and worked as a CNA with Lifecare at Lofland Park in Seaford. Donald loved going to Wednesday morning prayer meetings at John T. Harris. He enjoyed their local ministry and being able to build and install ramps for those in need. He also enjoyed listening to gospel music, walking to Redden Store, and having coffee with the Morning Coffee Club at McDonalds. Donald was a jokester, and in his spare time, he loved attending stock car races and car shows. He was also a member of Zoar U.M. Church. In addition to his parents, Donald is preceded in death by his wife, Joan (Gordy) West, in 2011; a son, David West; and three brothers, Preston, Norman and Harvey West. He is survived by two children, Donald L. West, Jr., and wife Karen of Idaho, and Debbie W. Melson and husband John of Frankford; two sisters, Minnie Hudson of Georgetown and Margaret Scott and husband Charles of Millsboro; three grandchildren, Tonya O'Leary, Katrina Clifford and Michael Melson; and seven great-grandchildren, Avriana, Alayna and Ailise O'Leary, London and Siena Clifford, Colby and Hayley Melson; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended family. A funeral service will be held at 1:00pm on Friday, September 7, 2018 in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, 609 E. Market Street, Georgetown, with a time of visitation from 11:00am-1:00pm. Burial will be in Union Cemetery. Flowers are accepted, or contributions in Donald's memory may be forwarded to Zoar U.M. Church, 24463 Gravel Hill Road, Millsboro, De 19966.
