CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Donald Brown Coleman Sr. of Chestertown died Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2007, in Chester River Hospital, Chestertown. He was 89.
Mr. Coleman was born Sept. 2, 1918, in Wilmington, Del., son of the late Bertie and Etta (Wheat) Coleman.
He was raised in Rock Hall and moved to Chestertown 62 years ago.
During the war, Mr. Coleman worked at the Powder Plant, Elkton, and later worked as a bricklayer for Rizzo and Kelley Contractors, building RFK Stadium and numerous buildings at Washington College. He also built the home he and his wife lived in.
He retired from The Knott Co., Baltimore, as a construction superintendent.
Mr. Coleman was a member of the Bricklayers Union and the Knights of Pythias, a charter member of the Kent & Queen Anne's Rescue Squad, a life member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary Squadron 19-04 and a member of the Chestertown Seventh Day Adventist Church.
He was preceded in death by his birth mother, Alice Brown Donaldson; a son-in-law, Michael Doran; and an aunt and uncle, Naomi and George Wheat.
Mr. Coleman is survived by his wife of 67 years, Clara Elizabeth (Ireland) Coleman; a daughter, Patricia Ann Coleman of Houston, Texas; his sons, Donald B. Coleman Jr. and his wife Margaret of Severna Park and Robert W. Coleman and his wife Dawn of Chestertown; two sisters, Ella Wright of Virginia Beach and Dorothy Humphries of Albuquerque, N.M.; a brother, Tom Donaldson of Virginia; four grandchildren, Donald B. Coleman III, R. Douglas Coleman, Laura E. Karns and Matthew Doran; and three great-grandchildren, Alexandra E. Coleman, Caiden Doran and William R. Coleman.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday in Chestertown Seventh Day Adventist Church, 305 N. Kent St., where friends may call one hour prior. Burial will be in Chester Cemetery.
Memorials may be offered to the Chestertown Seventh Day Adventist Church, 305 N. Kent St., Chestertown, MD 21620; or the Kent & Queen Anne's Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 126, Chestertown, MD 21620.
