PHILADELPHIA — Delaware South bounced back from an opening-game loss to win twice and advance to the second round of the Carpenter Cup softball tournament on Monday.
As one of the top two teams in Bracket B on Monday, the Downstate squad will return to Philadelphia’s FDR Park on Wednesday for a 9 a.m. quarterfinal contest.
Delaware South fell to Tri Cape, 10-5, in its opener on Monday. Tri Cape won Bracket B with a 3-0 record.
In its second contest, Delaware South topped Philadelphia PCCAF,17-0 , as Cape Henlopen High’s Alivia Heers hit a three-run triple to give the First State squad all the runs it needed.
Heers then added a two-run home run in the finale as Delaware South downed Inter Ac, 16-2, to earn its spot on Wednesday’s schedule.
Delaware South has won the Carpenter Cup title five times since the regional high school all-star tournament started in 2005. The Downstate all-stars last won the tourney in 2021.
