Colonel (Ret.) Hampton Green entered into heavenly eternity on Thursday, February 23, 2023 due to sudden cardiac complications at his home. He was born to the late Deloca and Hampton Green, Sr. in Bartow, Florida on June 22, 1925. Hampton was 97 years old.
Hampton served in the United States Air Force from 1954 to 1984, retiring after 30 years in the rank of Colonel. Hampton was a Dental Officer for 17 years, a Dental Surgeon for 8 years and a Dental Staff Officer for 5 years. He has had assignments at Anderson AFB, Guam; Westover AFB, Massachusetts; Goose Bay, Labrador; Hamilton AFB, California; Hickam AFB, Hawaii; Dover AFB, Delaware and Andrews AFB, Maryland, where he retired. Hampton's proudest achievements was the planning of the construction of the new dental clinic at Dover AFB that was completed in May 1976. Colonel Green, along with the then Delaware Senator Joe Biden, championed the creation of the "Home of the Brave", a homeless veterans shelter in Milford, Delaware. Hampton was also a skilled orator who was constantly sought after for speaking engagements.
Hampton was a decorated military officer whose awards included the Legion of Merit with one oak leaf cluster; the Meritorious Service Medal with one oak leaf cluster; the Air Force Commendation Medal; the Humanitarian Service Medal; the Air Force Longevity Service Ribbon with six oak leaf clusters; the National Defense Service Medal with one bronze star and the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with five oak leaf clusters.
Hampton was a key contributor to an "Overdenture" dental reference textbook 1st and 2nd editions. He was a member of the American Dental Association, Society of Oral Pathology, International College of Dentists, Air Force Association and the Retired Officers Association.
After retiring from the Air Force, Hampton took on the role of a public volunteer at local hospitals and the Delaware Department of Corrections. He was also an avid golfer.
Hampton was preceded in death by his loving wife, Johnie; and sister, Nordica. The Greens were married for 47 years. Hampton is survived by his nieces, Jacqueline and Yvette; and nephews, Richard, Leon and Charles. Mrs. Dollie Washington is Hampton's closest friend and caregiver who has been friends with the family for 53 years.
Visitation and viewing will be held Saturday, March 11, 2023, from 1 to 3 pm at Pippin Funeral Home, 119 W. Camden-Wyoming Ave., Wyoming, DE 19934. Celebration of Life service will be held immediately following the viewing from 3 to 4 pm at the Pippin Funeral Home. Military Honors will be given following the service. Interment burial will be held at 1 pm at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Bear Delaware on March 17, 2023, located at 2465 Chesapeake City Rd., Bear, DE 19701. A food and beverage repast will be held following the Military Honors at 5 pm at the Bob Evans Restaurant, 1650 North Dupont Hwy., Dover, DE 19901.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the Home of the Brave, 9 Causey Ave., Milford, DE 19963.
