Posted

Clifton A. Hutton of Dover passed away, Tuesday, December 24, 2024, at Kent General Hospital.
Formal education for Clif began with a BS in Art Education with a minor in Science from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. While teaching, he earned his Master of Education in Counseling from the same university. He completed his Doctor of Education degree in Counseling Psychology at Temple University.
Clif came to Delaware in 1972 after eleven years in Western Pennsylvania as a teacher, counselor, and coach. In Delaware, Clif worked for the State Department of Education as a State Human Relations Specialist, the State Supervisor of School Counseling, and eventually as the State Director of Student, Family, and School Services. In his spare time, he taught a number of graduate courses for the University of Delaware and Wilmington University. Clif spent two years on active duty with the U.S. Army and six years in the Army Reserves. His time in Germany led him to study the German language as an add-on in college, enabling him to speak and read the language to a limited extent.
He was first introduced to Rotary when he received a four-year scholarship from the Rotary Club in his hometown of Indiana, Pennsylvania. The scholarship was established in commemoration of the Rotary 50th Anniversary in 1955. After joining the Camden-Wyoming Rotary Club in 1990, with the encouragement of a co-worker PDG Joe Moore, Clif saw an opportunity to give something back by promoting scholarships and education through Rotary. He was the district scholarship chair for 14 years and the club scholarship chair for 12 years, while serving as scholarship chair for several other community groups. He is presently a member of the district Awards and Recognition Committee. Clif was club president in 1998-1999 and again in 2013-2014. He has served as a board member several times and is actively involved in all club activities and projects. He is a two-time Paul Harris Fellow. Clif received a Rotary Foundation District Service Award in 2000-2001 and an award of recognition as District Rotary Foundation Scholarship Chair 2010-2011.
After several years as a single father of two sons, Clif married his wife Marie, and they have been together for 48 years. Their sons, Bruce and Richard after serving in the military, both live in Austin, Texas where they work as computer engineers. They have three grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Clif and Marie both enjoy retirement after many years of working as teachers, counselors and administrators.
Memorial Service will be held, Sunday, March 2nd, 2025, from noon to 3 o'clock at Wild Quail Country Club, 1 Clubhouse Drive, Wyoming DE 19934. Seating is limited, non-rotary affiliated friends please contact Marie by February 19, 2025 - 302-670-1176.
