Charles C. Wright

Frederica - Charles C. Wright died on October 7, 2014. Mr. Wright was born on April 24, 1922, in Uniontown, Pennsylvania to the late Anna Emma Dewalt and Charles Oliver Wright. He was a veteran of World War II, serving as a 1st Lt., 81st Combat Engineers, attached to the 106th Infantry Division in the European theater and engaged in combat during the Battle of the Bulge in December-January 1944/45. Upon his return at the end of the war, he resumed his interrupted college career and graduated with a BS in Chemical Engineering from the University of Iowa in 1947. On April 2, 1949, he married Jean Chalfant. They were married for 65 years. Mr. Wright worked as a Sales Engineer for the US Rubber Company, as a Research and Development specialist collaborating on the Redstone Rocket project for Chrysler, in Product Marketing for the Shell Chemical Company, and finally for the Department of Defense in Northern New Jersey at Picatinny Arsenal, where he was instrumental in early military applications of carbon fiber and other composite materials. He spent the last ten years of his career planning a new laboratory designed to develop new rubber compounds suitable for use in defense applications. In 1985 he retired and moved to Delaware. Mr. Wright was active in community and church activities all of his life. As a young man, he sang as a baritone with the Westfield Men's Glee Club, served as a leader in the YMCA Indian Guides and as Committee Chair for Boy Scout Troop 150, was a devoted member of the United Methodist Church of Sparta, New Jersey, and upon moving to Delaware, joined the Presbyterian Church of Dover where he sang in the choir. He enjoyed golfing and woodworking, and most of all, spending time with his family. He is survived by his beloved wife Jean, of 65 years. His daughters, Janet Wright Starner and husband, Jed, of Lehighton, Pa.; and Jennifer Jane Wright of Cochranville, Pa. His sons Robert Scott Wright and wife Lori Marie, of Rye, N.H.; and Charles Chalfant Wright and wife, Ruth, of O'Fallon, Mo. Sister, Jane Wright Pugh of Arlington, Va. Twelve grandchildren Lori, Hillary, Natalie, Anna, Justin, Jessica, Melissa, Nathaniel, Emilie, Ben, Joe, and Hope. Thirteen great-grandchildren Haley, Elina, Laura, Noah, Aidan, Kelly, Riley, Ethan, Owen, Henry, Evelyn, Jackson, and Jameson. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday October 18, at Presbyterian Church of Dover located on 46 S. State Street, Dover, Del.
