GOLDSBORO, Md. - Carlton "Bud" Walls Smith Jr. of Goldsboro died Saturday, March 17, 2007, in University of Maryland Medical Center, Baltimore. He was 59.
Mr. Smith was born May 29, 1947, in Milford, son of Eleanor (Taylor) Smith of Goldsboro and the late Carlton W. Smith Sr.
He was a 1965 graduate of North Caroline High School, earning the honor of valedictorian.
Mr. Smith was a U.S. Army Vietnam War veteran, serving as a medic with the 101st Airborne Screaming Eagles.
He returned from Vietnam and graduated from University of Maryland in 1972, again as valedictorian with a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering.
Mr. Smith married his wife, Joan Boone, on June 9, 1973.
He began his career with Union Carbide in Charleston, W.Va., as a chemical engineer. He went on to work for ICI American/AstraZeneca in Wilmington as a research chemical engineer where he developed a process for sorbitol and jet fuel additive. He most recently was a technology manager for the Delaware State Housing Authority in Dover.
Mr. Smith volunteered as a Little League softball coach and for Caroline County Habitat for Humanity. He studied Tai Chi for years, was a self taught saxophone and violin player and loved flower gardening, especially day lilies. He also loved horses and was a trained furrier, but his greatest love was for his children, wife and family.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 33 years, Joan Boone Smith; two daughters, Megan Taylor Smith and Alexis Nicole Smith, both of Goldsboro; six siblings and their spouses, Carol and William Holden of Goldsboro, Robert Smith of Easton, Betty and h Daniel Schwaninger of Easton, Richard Smith of LaMont, Colo., Joseph and Joanne Smith of Imperial, Calif., and Trish and Peter Manfredi of S. Glastonbury, Conn.; his in-laws, Alvin and Pauline Boone of Dover; his brothers-in-law and sisters in-law, John and Diane Knies of Dover, Dorothy Baxter of Chestertown and Terry and Tommy Coleman of Sudlersville; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday in Fleegle and Helfenbein Funeral Home, 106 W. Sunset Ave., Greensboro.
Burial will be private.
