GREENWOOD - Carlton H. Melvin, of Greenwood, passed away Sunday, Jan. 8, 2012, at Bayhealth-Milford Memorial Hospital. He was 90. Mr. Melvin served his country proudly in the United States Army during WWII. He owned and operated Melvin's Garage in Greenwood for over 30 years. After selling the business, he became an employee for Nanticoke Homes for many years. As a young man, Mr. Melvin loved to water ski, and he enjoyed teaching others how to ski. He later gave that up as he moved on into bigger boats and fishing. Not only did he enjoy fishing, but he enjoyed playing golf. He became quite good at golf, and enjoyed beating others. In his spare time, when he was not fishing or golfing, he enjoyed gardening. His lima beans were the best around, and he liked to share them with others. Mr. Melvin was always willing to fix anything for anybody. A simple phone call to him, and he would be right there lending a hand. He was one of the original members of the old Pilgrim Holiness Church which is known today as Calvary Wesleyan Church in Harrington, where he continued to be a faithful member. In addition to his parents, Florence and Thomas Melvin Jr., he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Mary Melvin (2007); and seven brothers. He is survived by a son, Kirk M. Melvin of Philadelphia; a daughter and son-in-law, Karen M. and Carroll Young of Rocky Mount, N.C.; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. Services will be 2 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 12, 2012, at Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 South DuPont Hwy., Harrington, where a visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday evening. Interment will be in St. Johnstown Cemetery, Greenwood. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Calvary Wesleyan Church Building Fund, 240 Delaware Ave., Harrington, DE 19952.
