Byron R. Bookhout

DOVER - Byron R. Bookhout passed away Saturday, Dec. 19, 2015 at Westminster Village. Mr. Bookhout was born Nov. 27, 1914 in Laurens, N.Y. to the late Thomas E. Bookhout and Ethel A. Hand Bookhout. He spent most of his life in Morris, N.Y. where he helped with the family's dairy farm. Mr. Bookhout received his Doctorate Degree in Agriculture, from Purdue University. He served as an Airman in the United States Army Air Force during WWII. Mr. Bookhout married Evelyn Hodges in 1944. He worked for the US Department of Agriculture during which the family moved several times until his retirement in 1977. It was at this time when the family returned to upstate New York. After retirement, he worked as a carpenter, handyman and volunteered at Fox Hospital. In 1996 they moved to Westminster Village in Dover, Del. He remained active throughout his life with hobbies of carpentry, billiards, bowling and golf. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Evelyn in 2009; brother, Kester D. Bookhout in 1995. He is survived by daughter, Anne Wilson and her husband Stephen; granddaughter, Patricia Wilson; grandson, Christopher; great grandson, Olive Lee Wilson; nephew, Mark Baldwin and his wife Alex and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 9, 2016 at Westminster Community Center, 1175 McKee Road, Dover. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made to Alzheimer's Association, PO Box 96011, Washington, DC 20090-6011. Letters of condolences may be sent and guest book signed at www.torbertfuneral.com.
