CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Bird Jacquette Allender, of Chestertown, died on Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2011, at Chestertown Nursing and Rehabilitation. He was 103. Mr. Allender was born on Dec. 15, 1907, in Still Pond, Md. He was the son of the late Paul Bateman Allender and Ethel Jacquette Allender. Mr. Allender began school in Edesville, Md., in Rock Hall and later attended school in Baltimore City. He graduated from Polytechnic Institute in Baltimore and also attended and graduated from George Washington University. He was employed by the B & O Railroad in Baltimore City then transferred to New York City where he worked for the B & O until 1941. In 1941, he was offered and accepted a position with the United States Army as a Transportation Router Clerk. He later transferred to the General Accounting Offices in Washington, D.C. where he was employed until his retirement in 1970. He purchased his home on the Chester River in Queen Anne's County in 1964 and commuted to Washington, D.C. until his retirement. Mr. Allender was a member of the Washington Daylight Lodge No 14, Washington, D.C., the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Valley of Washington, Orient of District of Columbia, a life member of the Shriners of North American, Almas Temple in Washington, D.C., and of the Shriners International. He was a collector of violins and enjoyed all kinds of music from Bach to Bluegrass. He also had an interest in all kinds of "things" from antiques to junk. He was a fixture at the Crumpton Auction on Wednesdays. For the last year, Mr. Allender was living at the Safe Haven Assisted Living facility in Sudlersville. While there, he enjoyed attending the activities at the Sudlersville Senior Center. In addition to his parents, Mr. Allender was preceded in death by his sister, Charlotte Ann Allender Hatcherson. He is survived by his nephew, Robert R. Hatcherson Jr.; and his nieces, Charlotte Ann Hatcherson Fletcher and Ethel Paula Hatcherson Cunningham. He is also survived by six grand nieces and nephews and six great-grand nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held on Saturday, Aug. 13, 2011, at 2 p.m. at Wesley Chapel Cemetery.
