DOVER - Betty Marie McWilliams passed away Saturday, January 30, 2021. She was born on December 13, 1932 in Dover to Charles and Blanche Erdle.
After graduating from Dover High School, she went on to work at the Diamond State Telephone Company. She worked for Dr. Bishoff in Dover, then worked for Representative Julian Richardson. Betty was the Kent County Executive Secretary for Senator Bill Roth for a number of years, and then worked at Legislative Hall until her retirement. Betty played field hockey in high school, was a treasured wife, and raised three daughters. She was a member of Eastern Star and was active as past president and secretary of the Kent County Republican Women's association.
In addition to her parents; she was preceded in death by her husband, James A. McWilliams whom she was married to for 62 years; her daughter Laura McWilliams Howard; and her sister, Nancy Erdle Potter.
She is survived by her two daughters, Vicki Marie Stephens (John) of Havre de Grace, Md., and Julie Ann Ellwanger (Virgil) of Millsboro, Del.; in addition to her ten grandchildren, Jessica Simmons (Karen Dennis), Stephen Simmons (Meghan), Leslie DiPietro (Tony), James Case, Rachel Jackson (Geoff), Patrick Spence, Ray Bryant, Janel Andersen (Ethan), Rachel Kuester and John Stephens III (Katie); she is also survived by her 13 great grandchildren which include Chandler Blake, Isabella Perez, AJ DiPietro, Maggie Simmons, Alexander Jackson, Margot Andersen, Nathan DiPietro, Trip Simmons, Cohen Andersen, Blythe Simmons-Dennis, Rowan Jackson, Mac Simmons and Beau Simmons-Dennis. She was well-loved by her family and many friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 7023 Merrifield, VA 22116-7023.
