CLAYTON - Betty May Miles, age 85, of Clayton, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2010, surrounded by her loving family. Born on July 9, 1925, in Elkton, Md., she was the daughter of the late Edward H. and Emma Sherron Eklund. Mrs. Miles retired from the Cecil County Department of Social Services in 1990. She had served as a travel coordinator for the Cecil Travelers, sponsored by the Cecil County Department of Aging, and was vice president of the National Foster Parent Association. For her service as a foster parent to 35 children, Mrs. Miles was recognized by the News Journal for many years of service to the Foster Parent Organization, her timeless energy in providing a home and for many loving hours in her kitchen, canning hundreds of jars of vegetables and fruits to sustain a large family during the winters. She resided in Holly Hall, Elkton, until she had massive heart surgery in 2005, and moved to Clayton to live with her son, Charles. A NASCAR fan, she enjoyed gardening, canning and word searches. Survivors include her children, Joyce Curry Rapley and husband, Steve, Charles J. Miles, Jr., and Robert L. Simpers and wife, Mary; grandchildren, Kathryn Rapley Smith and husband, Chris, William Rapley and wife, Jamie, Lisa Miles Barrick and husband, Dan, Logan Simpers, Christopher, Emmitt and William Blevins, and Kera Blevins Jeffords; great-grandchildren, Casey, William, Jillian, Reed, Cecelia, Jarod, DaKota, Dylan, Kyle and Bryce; and sisters, Dorothy Rother, Hazel Howery, Anne Biddle, Loretta Thompson and Cindy Cannizarrio. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Miles was preceded in death by her husband, Charles J. Miles; first husband, Arnold F. Curry; and daughter, Sherron Miles. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 9, 2010, at Hicks Home for Funerals, 103 W. Stockton St., Elkton, Md. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 8, at the funeral home. Interment will follow the service in Christiana Cemetery, Christiana, Del. Flowers are welcome; however, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, VA 23058-5216.
