HARRINGTON - Betty Jean (Wilson) Benson of Harrington died after a long illness Friday, Dec. 29, 2006, in Greater Baltimore Medical Center, Towson, Md. She was 60.
Mrs. Benson was born April 10, 1946, youngest child of the late Jonah and Easter Wilson.
She was a graduate of Norwayne High School, Fremont, N.C. In 1973 she attended nursing school in Baltimore, where she became a nurse, serving for 33 years.
Mrs. Benson retired from the state of Maryland after working at Springfield, Rosewood, Spring Grove and Jessup state hospitals. She could not keep still, so she continued working as a nurse until 2003.
She loved to listen to gospel music. She would bounce her head to the beat of the music and smile. Some of her favorite songs were, "I've Got My Mind Made Up," "What a Mighty God We Serve," "When the Saints Go Marching In," "Looking for You" and "There's Going to be a Meeting."
She married Minister Milton Benson July 28, 2002. Even though they had no children together, they were still blessed with eight children between them.
Mrs. Benson attended New Hope Pentecostal Church, where she was a very faithful member. She served as director of nurses, head nurse for the church and director of the pastor's choir.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Sarah Tinsley and Georgianna Smith; and a brother, Louis Earl Wilson.
She is survived by her husband, Minister Milton Benson of Harrington; two sons and two daughters-in-law, Willie Jr. and Gina Coley and Jonathon and June Coley; a daughter and a son-in-law, Wanese and Bob Samuel; two stepdaughters, Kizzy Bonnville and Lavina Bonnville; three stepsons, Milton Smith, Ivan Smith and Desmond Benson; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Doris and James Green and Lula Mae Sutton; a brother, Jonah and Jo Ann Wilson; three grandsons, Kenneth Leighton Jr., Jonathon Matthew Coley and Antonio Boykins; three granddaughters, Shelisa Marshall, Sherrina Coley and Gabriel Coley; three sisters-in-law, Tina Wilson, Elder Marian Benson and Mabel L. Harmon; a brother-in-law, Bishop Ralph A. Benson; a special godson, Jeremy Sells; a very good friend, Missionary Alice Smith; and a host of nieces, nephews and close friends.
Services will be 6 p.m. today in New Hope Pentecostal Church, Sharon Hill Road, Dover, where friends may call two hours earlier.
