WILMINGTON - Bernice M. House was the first daughter born to the late Esley and Alice Johnson on Feb. 21, 1920, in Jamison, Ala. Bernice M. House peacefully went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2011, after a short illness. She was 90. Bernice was a long time resident of Wilmington. She received her early education in Jamison, Ala. and secondary education was received at Tuskegee Institute and Monroe La. Bernice was a founding and faithful member of New Hope Baptist Church and served as the director of the Senior Choir and Male Chorus for many years. She was a member of the Missionary Society and the Pastors Aide Society. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family and close friends. Bernice was preceded in death by her husband, James A. House; both parents, Esley and Alice Johnson; three brothers, Robert, Ollie and Edward Johnson. She leaves to cherish her memory one daughter, Marian L. Harris, and one step-daughter, Valerie (Robert) Vaughan of Sellvilles, Ga.; four grandchildren, Larry D. Harris of Dover, Lisa (Tommy) Deputy of Smyrna, Lynette (Pierre) Todd of Lanham, Md., Adora Vaughan of Snellvilles, Ga.; ten great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren; six sisters, Mary Randolph, Essie Mixon, Icerene Cuffy of Wilmington, Alvannah Davis of Lincoln, Callie Wilson of Maplesville, Ala., and Gracie Howard of Detroit, Mich.; one sister-in-law, Gloria Johnson; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral Services will be held 10:30 a.m., Monday, Feb. 21, At New Hope Baptist Church, 1230 North Heald Street, Wilmington, De 19802, where friends may gather two hours earlier.
