Bernard G. Hassemer of Ocean View died peacefully Monday, Dec. 25, 2006, in his home surrounded by his family. He was 76.
Mr. Hassemer received his bachelor of science degree from the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire and his master of science from Iowa State University.
He was a Korean War veteran, serving with the U.S. Army.
Mr. Hassemer was the first science teacher at Arrowhead High School, Hartland, Wis., in 1956. He was a longstanding department chair for the science department at A.H.S. He developed a special course for advanced chemistry students and was admired by his peers and students alike. After retiring from A.H.S. in 1988, he and his wife moved to Delaware to be near the ocean, which they both loved.
He had many talents and interests, including stamp collecting. He devoted his career to helping students learn and love chemistry. He was a devoted family man who endlessly worked to provide for his family.
Mr. Hassemer loved writing poetry. He won many awards from Who's Who of Poetry and was a member of the International Society of Poets.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Anna Mae Hassemer in 2005; his parents, Anton and Mary (Kramshuster) Hassemer; four sisters, Frances, Josephine, Philomine and Marie; and a brother, Antony.
He is survived by four children and a son-in-law, Patti and James West of Ocean View, Lynn Krier of Georgetown, Jane Hassemer of Pewaukee, Wis., and John Hassemer of Hartland; a brother and a sister-in-law, Edward and Verdine Hassemer; a sister, Margurite Smith; a sister-in-law, Rita Hassemer; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and an adopted family from the Philippines, Rapunzel Morales and Rosary Morales.
Friends may call from 12:45 to 1:30 p.m. Friday in the Bethany Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, West Avenue, Ocean View. A Mass of Christian burial will be 2 p.m. in St. Ann's Catholic Church, Bethany Beach.
Burial will be in Mariner's Bethel Cemetery, Ocean View.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to American Lung Association, 1021 Gilpin Ave, Wilmington, DE. 19806.
