Nancarrow, 80 SEAFORD - Barbara A. Nancarrow, age 80, of Seaford, passed away on Sunday, May 17, 2015. Barbara was born in Stonersville, Pa. on January 2, 1935 to Claude and Naomi Rissmiller. The first in her family to attend college, she graduated in 1956 with a degree in Physical Education from West Chester State Teacher's College. She began her teaching career in the Milford School District in 1956 during the transition to integrated schools. After teaching for eight years, she married William M. Nancarrow and reared two children. During this time, she volunteered for the American Cancer Society, organizing events, driving women to Wilmington for mammograms, and helping to establish a tumor registry. Barbara returned to teaching in the Seaford School District in 1976, teaching elementary art, music, and physical education, middle school and high school physical education. While at Seaford Middle School, her most rewarding teaching experiences were volunteering with Special Olympics and teaching adaptive physical education to students in the Orthopedically Handicapped program. After retiring in 1997, she volunteered several days a week at Seaford High School with special education teacher Lourie Wheatley and they created a Saturday morning breakfast club where they read and discussed novels with students. Most nights, she could be seen at one of the local restaurants, working the room and catching up with old friends. Barbara was most proud of her two children, Bill and Susan, and her grandson Alex, and they were most proud of her lifetime commitment to helping others. She is survived by her son, Bill, daughter-in-law Cheryl, and grandson Alex, of Brookline, Mass.; her daughter, Susan, of Seaford; and devoted friends, Sandra Orbison and Lourie Wheatley. Funeral Services were Saturday, May 23, 2015 at 10 a.m. at Gethsemane United Methodist Church, 2701Woodland Ferry Rd, Seaford. Friends called at the Cranston Funeral Home, 300 N. Shipley St., Seaford on Friday evening from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Special Olympics or the American Cancer Society.
