Athlete of the Week: Cimone Edge, Smyrna softball

Posted

SMYRNA — Smyrna High softball player Cimone Edge was voted this week’s State News Athlete of the Week.

The junior went 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles and four RBI in a win over Caesar Rodney before adding a three-run home run in a victory over Delmarva Christian.

The victories helped the Eagles to six wins in a stretch of seven games as they improved to 9-6.

A former pitcher who battled injuries the last two seasons, Edge stepped in at third base this spring. A team captain, she leads the team in most offensive categories.

“We’re really excited about how she’s stepped up a leader this year,” said Nina Marcano, who is in her first season as Smyrna’s head coach. “Really her approach at the plate has been getting better and better every single at-bat.

“She’s really a great comeback story. This is the first time the state’s actually gotten a chance to see her all the way through and be healthy. She’s just a force to be reckoned with. I’m super proud of what she’s been able to put together so far this season and excited because she keeps getting hotter and hotter.”
