DOVER - Alice Rodenhiser Rasmussen, of Dover, died Friday, Nov. 25, at the age of 84. She was born in New London, Conn., on July 18, 1927, the only child of Spurgeon Rodenhiser and (Ida) May Mailman, both natives of Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia. Alice attended high school at Williams Memorial Institute in New London, where she played violin and edited the school yearbook. She went on to nurse's training at Children's Hospital in Boston and then earned her Bachelor's Degree in Nursing from Teacher's College at Columbia University in New York City. Later in life, she earned a Master's Degree in Counseling from Southern Illinois University. She was a pediatric nursing instructor at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in New York City, Evanston Hospital in Evanston, Illinois, North Shore Community Hospital in Glen Cove, N.Y., and Nathan Littauer Hospital in Gloversville, N.Y. She also worked as a research assistant at Brown University in Providence, R.I. Alice first came to Dover in 1968 when her husband, Dr. Robert T. Rasmussen, was named Superintendent of the Capital School District. She worked at Wesley College from 1970 to her retirement in 1991, first as a nursing instructor, then as Director of Counseling and later as Dean of Students. After her retirement from Wesley, she joined the Education Department at Kent General Hospital in Dover and was well-known for holding blood-pressure clinics at communities throughout Kent County. She retired from the hospital at age 79, after a 60 year career in nursing. She also served as a member of the Delaware Child Placement Review Board (Foster Care) and the State Executive Committee. Over the years she was active in other organizations including the American Baptist Convention, Red Cross, Girl Scouts, the Dover Century Club and the Modern Maturity Center. Alice was a devoted mother and grandmother and a wonderful friend. Her strength of character, intelligence and caring nature will be remembered by all who knew her. She is survived by her daughter, Lisa Rasmussen; son-in-law, Christopher Cavas; and her beloved granddaughter, Sarah Cavas, all of Bethesda, Md. A memorial service will be 11 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 10, at the Wesley College Chapel (old First Baptist Church) Division and South Bradford Streets, Dover. Letters of condolence may be sent, and guestbook signed at www.torbertfuneral.com.
