CHESTERTOWN, Md. - William Stewart Baldwin of Chestertown died April 30, 2007, in Chestertown Nursing and Rehabilitation. He was 85.
Born on Feb. 27, 1922, in Chestertown, he was the son of the late George Walker and Esther Elizabeth Hartman Baldwin.
Mr. Baldwin was a 1939 graduate of Chestertown High School and attended Washington College. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II, volunteering the day after Pearl Harbor. He saw action in the South Pacific Theater.
Mr. Baldwin was honorably discharged in 1945. After returning he went to work as a district manager with Babson Brothers for a time before returning to Chestertown to work for Baldwin Electrical Co.
In the past 50 years, he served on the boards of First United Methodist Church and Magnolia Hall and as life member, past president and board of directors of the Chestertown Volunteer Fire Co.
On April 13, 1990, he was inducted into The Kent and Queen Anne's Fire and Rescue Association Hall of Fame. Mr. Baldwin was also a life member of Frank Jarman American Legion Post 36.
Mr. Baldwin is survived by his three children, William S. Baldwin Jr. and his wife, Susan of Kennedyville, Ellen Mielke and her husband, Allan of Easton, and David Baldwin of Chestertown; five grandchildren, Monica Clark of Greensboro, N.C., Christopher Mielke of Cary, N.C., Jason Mielke of Columbia, Julie Mielke of Easton and Charlie Athey of Chestertown; one sister, Elizabeth Booth of Stow, Ohio; three brothers, George Baldwin of Marathon, Fla., Allen Baldwin of Chestertown and Hugh Baldwin of Chestertown; and a dear friend and companion, Doris Semans.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at First United Methodist Church, Chestertown. Family and friends may call Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, 130 Speer Road, Chestertown.
Interment will be in Chester Cemetery, Chestertown.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Kent & Queen Anne's Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 126, Chestertown, MD 21620; or Chestertown Volunteer Fire Co., P.O. Box 296, Chestertown, MD 21620.
