William P. Truitt

William P. Truitt of Dover died at home Monday, Feb., 19, 2007. He was 75.

Bill was born Aug. 28, 1931, to the late Claude W. and Mary (Williams) Truitt.

He graduated from Seaford High School and attended the University of Delaware until he joined the U.S. Air Force, where he served during the Korean War.

After his discharge from the military, Bill worked for GMAC for eight years, working in Salisbury, Dover, Baltimore and Smyrna. He was then employed by Townsend Bros. Chevrolet, Dover, where he worked in sales management for 28 years, retiring in 1991. Following his retirement, he worked for Parkview R.V. Center, Smyrna.

After his retirement, Bill became interested in city of Dover government. He served on several committees, including parks and recreation, and eventually ran for Dover City Council, where he served for eight years. He was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, Dover, a former member of Dover Jaycees where he served as president, Delaware Jaycees, where he served as vice-president, and the Delaware Heart Association.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, C. Alan Truitt; a father-in-law and a mother-in-law, Orval and Elizabeth Gardner; a sister-in-law, Jean M. Gardner; and a brother-in-law, James O. Gardner.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Mary Gardner Truitt of Dover; a son and a daughter-in-law, W. Gregory and Linda Truitt of Hockessin; a brother, John P. Truitt of Cumberland, Md.; a sister and a brother-in-law, Doris and Bill Torbert of Dover; a granddaughter, Paige Truitt of Hockessin; a grandson, Campbell Truitt, of Hockessin; a godson, James D. Gardner of Millsboro; a brother-in-law, Paul Gardner of Warsaw, N.Y.; a sister-in-law, Cynthia S. Gardner of Long Point; a sister-in-law and husband, Nora A. and Everett Warrington of Long Point; a brother-in-law and wife, Fred L. and Shirley Gardner of Warrenton, Va.; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be March 3 at 2 p.m. in Torbert Funeral Chapel South, 1145 E. Lebanon Road, Dover.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Dover Parks and Recreation, P.O. Box 475, Dover, DE 19903, which was very dear to Bill's heart.
