DENTON, Md. - William J. Tibbitt, of Denton, died Saturday, March 22, 2008, at the Memorial Hospital of Easton. He was 78.

Mr. Tibbitt was born in Snow Hill on Oct. 25, 1929, son of the late Oliver and Nora Tibbitt.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Cynthia Nashold Tibbitt; four children, Gayle MacDonald and husband Bruce of Preston, Tracey Thomas and husband Bobby of Greensboro, Jamie Tibbitt and wife Patti of Ridgely and Kristin Bringman and husband Bob of Preston; a brother, Howard Tibbitt of Delaware; a sister, Marie Wilson of Milford, Del.; seven grandchildren, Lindsay Young and husband Shane, RB MacDonald, Adam Thomas, Michael Thomas, Lauren Tibbitt, Kyle Bringman and Katie Bringman; and a brother-in-law, Gale Nashold of Greensboro.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Sam Tibbitt; and grandson, Wade Thomas.

Mr. Tibbitt worked for the Pet Milk Co. from 1946 to 1959 as a weigher and sampler of condensed milk.

His work at Pet Milk was interrupted from 1951 to 1953 with a tour of duty in the Army serving in the Korean War.

He married his wife, Cynthia, upon returning from the war in 1953.

In 1959 Mr. Tibbitt went on to work for the International Playtex Co. of Dover, Del., in the Chemical Division. This company was sold in the mid-1970s to Reichold Chemical Co. of Cheswold, for which he worked in the quality control lab. In 1993, after 35 years of service, Mr. Tibbitt retired from the two companies as a quality control manager.

Mr. Tibbitt was a Little League baseball coach in Greensboro for over 20 years. He volunteered for the Greensboro Fireman's Carnival spinning the "Big Wheel" during the 1960s and 70s.

He was a very active member and integral part of the Caroline Memorial Veterans of Foreign Wars 7937. He served as their post commander for two terms, 1992 through 1994 and 2000-01, and also as second in command between those years.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Fleegle and Helfenbein Funeral Home, 106 W. Sunset Ave., Greensboro, MD 21639.

Visitation will be held Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Greensboro Cemetery.
