William I. 'Bill' Smoot, 91
DUNEDIN, Fla. - William I. "Bill" Smoot of Dunedin died Sunday, Dec. 3, 2006, in Clearwater. He was 91.
Mr. Smoot was born Sept. 30, 1915, in Seaford, Del., son of the late Irvin F. and Bessie (Wilson) Smoot.
He was a 1933 graduate of Seaford High School and a 1937 graduate of Duke University.
He grew up in Seaford on the family's Lone Elm Farm and helped with the family business. He delivered milk from the Lone Elm Dairy with Baltimore Bill, the horse who pulled the milk wagon.
He began work with Chatham Manufacturing in North Carolina until being called to serve in the U.S. Army during World War II. He started as an enlisted man and achieved the rank of major as an artillery commander seeing action in Germany.
He returned to Chatham Manufacturing after the war and rose to manager of the contracts division in New York City.
He was a descendent of early colonists in Delaware and Maryland dating from the 1600s.
He enjoyed golfing. He was an outgoing and friendly person who loved his family and stayed in touch with many friends from college, military and work.
Mr. Smoot was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, Dunedin and the Dunedin Country Club.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Rebecca Moore and Louise McNeilly; and a daughter, Nancy Cooper.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Helen; a daughter and a son-in-law, Mary and Ed Steinbrecher of Evergreen, Colo.; a son, John Smoot of Longmont, Colo.; a sister and a brother-in-law, Ann (Smoot) and Bob Cowin of Stuart, Fla.; four grandchildren, Ayse Cooper of Houston, Texas, Matthew Smoot, Daniela Smoot and Luisa Smoot, all of Colorado; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be 1 p.m. Jan. 14 in St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Seaford.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
